Patrick Mahomes: ‘Further particular’ Kansas Metropolis Chiefs quarterback has confirmed he is without doubt one of the biggest athletes of his era | NFL Information

Even in defeat Patrick Mahomes seemingly finds new methods to underline what makes him one of many biggest gamers the NFL has seen.

The Kansas Metropolis Chiefs quarterback endured a irritating night time on Sunday as his aspect noticed their excellent begin to the season come to an finish in a 20-3 loss to the Tremendous Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

Talking on Contained in the Huddle, Sky Sports activities NFL’s Neil Reynolds and Jeff Reinebold hailed additional proof of the ‘generational’ competitiveness and mentality that has amounted to a few Tremendous Bowl victories, 5 Tremendous Bowl appearances and 7 straight AFC Championship Sport outings from 2018-2024.

Among the many recreation’s flashpoints was a third-quarter fumble by Mahomes himself, prompting a chaotic sequence during which he put his physique on the road whereas chasing down the unfastened ball.

“I do know he misplaced, however Patrick Mahomes is an unimaginable competitor,” mentioned Sky Sports activities NFL presenter Reynolds on Contained in the Huddle. “I wish to return to Tremendous Bowl 50, it was a fumble, Cam Newton stood there and did not dive on the pile, watched the ball, simply watched it, left it. It was a Tremendous Bowl. We had been very essential of him in that second.

“There is a half within the recreation. It is 13-0 to Seattle. Mahomes will get completely slammed within the again by Derick Corridor, fumbles the ball, ball’s on the bottom rolling in direction of the sideline. Mahomes chases it, will get tripped over by one other defender, falls flat on his face, will get again up, dives, by which period, it is a melee then, there’s offensive linemen, defensive linemen, he dives in there once more, disappears underneath the underside of the pile and comes out with the soccer.

“They kick a subject objective, he will get the ball again, they’re rolling a little bit bit, it gave them vitality for a interval. I simply have not seen that earlier than, a quarterback so hungry, perhaps at his personal expense, to get after a soccer.

Mahomes and the Chiefs, due to plenty of assist from marquee addition Kenneth Walker III, have rediscovered their spark on offense this 12 months after Kansas Metropolis missed out on the playoffs for the primary time since 2014 final season.

It had been one thing of a staff reborn forward of their defeat in Seattle, Mahomes teasing shades of his greatest as soon as extra after present process knee surgical procedure final 12 months.

“I’ve seen him follow as nicely at Chiefs coaching camp three, 4 instances, and on a few these events there aren’t even followers watching,” Reynolds continued. “Unhealthy climate pressured the Chiefs inside, of their indoor facility. So it is only a handful of media there. He competes on a regular basis. I imply, on a regular basis. It isn’t like he is getting up for the followers after they’re out on the follow subject in coaching camp, indoor facility, nobody watching.

“Ask him for a race or recreation of playing cards within the locker room, wager he is the identical means. There’s just a few folks which can be simply wired totally different. That is how they get to the place they’re.”

‘Mahomes has Mamba Mentality’

Reinebold likened Mahomes’ mindset to that of NBA icons Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan, insisting his will to win and aggressive drive have been simply as essential as his arm expertise and intelligence in fuelling his rise to greatness.

“There are plenty of the explanation why Pat Mahomes is without doubt one of the high quarterbacks that we have seen in our era,” mentioned Reinebold. I feel I can say that pretty. He is acquired all of the bodily instruments, but it surely’s the intangible issues, proper? His soccer intelligence, and his aggressive coronary heart. That was on show in that recreation. That is the way you get your staff to rally, after they see you because the quarterback placing your self in danger for the staff, that speaks volumes to that soccer staff.

“How are you going to as an offensive lineman or a receiver or one other place participant not give it up while you see the very best quarterback in our era placing himself in danger for the soccer? I really like the truth that he competes as onerous as he does. He would not need to show something to anyone as a result of we have watched him play harm over his profession.”

Mahomes, whose Chiefs play the Denver Broncos dwell on Sky Sports activities this weekend, is one in all simply 5 quarterbacks in historical past to win three or extra Tremendous Bowls as a starter, is a two-time MVP, a three-time Tremendous Bowl MVP and holds NFL data in whole single-season yards by a quarterback (5,608) and profession passing yards per recreation (285.2).

“The playoff recreation the place he may barely stroll and he went out and completed the sport and received the sport for his soccer staff. This man is an additional particular expertise,” Reinebold continued.

“That is most likely a standard thread amongst the entire nice athletes of of the day. You discuss Mamba Mentality with Kobe Bryant. He wrote books about how aggressive he was and the way intense his exercises had been, I am certain [Cristiano] Ronaldo and all the nice ones have that very same thread operating via them that they are intensely aggressive about all the pieces.

“Michael Jordan was well-known that he needed to compete at all the pieces, after they would go on on journeys the bags would come on the carousel, he’d wager his baggage got here off first. That is how aggressive these guys are.”
