Whereas Duckett’s 105 in opposition to Pakistan held a poor England innings collectively, right here he was ruthless.
With little or no swing or seam motion on provide, Duckett was capable of again himself to flay something large of the off stump and timed the ball exquisitely off his pads when Sri Lanka had been pressured to bowl straighter.
They tried to check with the brief ball, too, however he was significantly prolific in opposition to it because the seamers lacked the tempo to actually bother him.
It was additionally a formidable show of health from a participant who has spoken about how arduous he has labored at that a part of his recreation, finally falling within the forty second over from a miscued ramp because the fatigue appeared to take its toll.
Duckett appears to relish opening with Banton: the pair have stands of 143, 6, 91, 74, 4 and 163 of their previous six outings collectively. That, and Banton’s kind, has given England’s selectors an intriguing conundrum for when Jacob Bethell returns from damage in Australia.
Bethell beforehand occupied the opening slot alongside Duckett however Banton, with 5 scores of fifty plus in his previous six knocks, appears prone to have nailed down his place on this tour, regardless of some frustration that he couldn’t kick on to a few figures when situations had been so beneficial.
“You need choices, and guys to push their case after they get their alternatives,” England coach Brendon McCullum informed Sky Sports activities after the sport.
“They’re good issues for us to have. We are going to be taught extra about that in Australia, however we’ll at all times do what’s proper for the staff relying on situations and the opposition.”
Bethell’s versatility may probably see him discover a place within the center order, however it’s a promising indication of England’s spectacular white-ball depth that it’s unclear who he may exchange from Root, Brook and Jacks, with Jordan Cox wanted as keeper in Jos Buttler’s damage absence.
